VIN Lookup FAQ
How do I check if my car has a recall using my VIN?
Enter your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) above. We decode it via NHTSA's free public VIN database to identify your vehicle's manufacturer, then show you how many NHTSA-tracked recalls are on file for that manufacturer, with a direct link to browse them.
Does this tool tell me if my exact VIN is affected by a recall?
Not with certainty — and no independent site honestly can. Recall applicability is determined by specific production date ranges and VIN ranges that only the manufacturer and NHTSA's official system have. This tool decodes your VIN to identify your manufacturer and shows every recall on file for it. For a guaranteed VIN-specific match, use NHTSA's own free lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls — we link there for every result.
Where can I find my VIN?
Your VIN is on your vehicle registration, insurance card, and printed on a metal plate visible through the windshield on the driver's side dashboard, or on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb.
Is my VIN stored or shared?
No. The lookup is stateless — your VIN is sent to NHTSA's public vPIC decoder to identify the vehicle, and Vehicle Safety Recalls Tracker does not log, store, or share it.
What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code (letters and numbers, excluding I, O, and Q) assigned to every vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, model, model year, and other build details.
